GCC ministers agree joint police force plan

Manama, May 1, 2014

The interior ministers of the GCC states approved a plan to set up a joint police organisation as they convened for their 15th consultative meeting in Kuwait.

Interior Minister Lieutenant-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa led Bahrain's delegation to the session, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

The GCCPOL will be headquartered in Abu Dhabi.

The ministers commended ongoing efforts to finalise the establishment of the GCC's permanent bureau at the UN in Vienna.

The office will play a key role in consolidating GCC security co-ordination, particularly in the fight against narcotics.

Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister, Interior Minister and head of the current GCC interior ministers' session Shaikh Mohammed Al Khalid Al Hamad Al Sabah chaired the meeting.

GCC Secretary-General Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani said key issues were discussed to consolidate co-operation, protect GCC security and stability, and preserve achievements.

The ministers commended the efforts of GCC security agencies in combating drug trafficking, tracking down criminals and protecting Gulf societies from the lethal effects of narcotics.

They underscored the importance of collective work to beef up security and bolster stability.

The ministers hailed GCC co-ordination to counter terrorism, eradicate terrorist cells and organisations, and combat terror mindset and extremist doctrines which contravene tolerant Islamic precepts and genuine Arab values.

They praised Saudi and Bahraini authorities for issuing directives banning their citizens from taking part in fighting abroad, joining extremists and terrorist groups. – TradeArabia News Service
