UK naval HQ expansion in Bahrain ‘routine’

Manama, April 24, 2014

Expansion of the UK Maritime Component Command were “mere military facilities, routinely provided by Bahrain to all friendly countries through its civil seaports as part of joint co-operation”, a Bahrain Defence Force official source said.

The official was speaking in response to a report published yesterday (April 22) by the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

The Foreign Ministry also issued a statement in this regard.

Minister plenipotentiary and acting director of information, studies and research Nancy Jamal said: “I want to correct the impression that might arise from the articles that this is a major new foreign military base. In fact, the project is simply the development of the existing facility, in what is a civilian area.

“Further, it is in line with the ongoing co-operation between Bahrain and the UK, and the facilities extended by Bahrain to friendly and allied countries to help us better work together on issues of joint concern, such as promoting regional security and combating piracy, human trafficking,” she said in a statement. – TradeArabia News Service
