A Pakistani who suffered severe brain damage during a brutal attack three years ago could finally get BD50,000 ($131,836) compensation from the government, according to a top official.

A gang of 10 men attacked Irfan Ahmad Bakhsh Muhammad with metal rods and wooden planks in March 2011 before severing his tongue during a campaign of violence waged against Bahrain's Asian community by anti-government thugs, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The construction worker and part-time prayer caller is still in a vegetative state at the BDF Hospital.

His brother Ghulam Nabi, who has been waiting to receive compensation from the government, earlier told the GDN he had lost all hope.

However, Bahrain's courts director Mohammed Bucheery has confirmed Muhammad's family could get the government compensation within the next two months.

"This case is complicated and we are still working on it," he told the GDN.

"We have paid the people who died during the unrest and each family received BD60,000.

"We haven't finalised and signed documents, but Muhammad's relatives could get approximately BD50,000 as compensation.

"We are trying to push this matter and trying to work on this case very closely.

"Nothing is finalised yet, but we are hoping to finish everything by next month or early April.

"We have contacted all the authorities and compiled a report on Muhammad's case, which was submitted to senior officials."

Doctors have said Muhammad's condition is unlikely to improve.

The GDN earlier reported that a BD10 million fund was set up in March 2012 to compensate people affected by the unrest.

The Civil Settlement Initiative had more than 6,000 claims from civilians in its first 24 hours of opening.

Cases included incidence of murder, abduction, assault, sexual harassment, medical negligence and psychological trauma, all incurred during the unrest.

Last month, Pakistani Ambassador Jauhar Saleem urged Bahrain to speed up the settlement of compensation claims made by civilians during the unrest. - TradeArabia News Service
