New media strategy to face challenges in GCC urged

MANAMA, March 19, 2015

A media strategy to counter hostile campaigns orchestrated against the GCC was urged yesterday (March 18).

The call came during the first Middle East Conference for Media Strategy which opened in Bahrain, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The Council of Gulf International Relations is organising the event in co-operation with ProMedia International Company in Kuwait, under the patronage of His Majesty's adviser for information affairs Nabeel Al Hamer.

Editors-in-chief of local newspapers and media representatives attended the forum, held under the slogan 'Toward a GCC and Arab Media Strategy'.

Addressing the symposium, Akhbar Al Khaleej editor-in-chief Anwar Abdulrahman highlighted the hostile media strategies targeting Bahrain and other GCC states.

"The media campaign being orchestrated against Bahrain is based essentially on distorting truths and facts on the ground," he said, warning against political and media sides harbouring sectarian forces that plot against the kingdom's security, stability and Arab identity.

Abdulrahman stressed the importance of establishing think tanks in Western countries to counter Western studies and researches targeting GCC and Arab countries and societies and reach out to neutral elites in the US and the Western states.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Al Hamer called for the need for a media strategy that reflects principles and traditions of the Arabian Gulf society and projects GCC identity, authenticity, history and long-standing heritage.

"The accelerating spread of terrorism, violence, extremism and conflicts necessitates an urgent media strategy to confront challenges, stave off threats and protect our societies against destructive intellectual and ideological assimilation," he said.

The Bahrain Institute for Political Development hosted the symposium.

"The aim of media is to protect societies against internal and external threats and challenges," he said, pointing out that security can't be achieved in the age of openness and globalisation unless a military, security, economic and media strategy is adopted.

Al Hamer condemned defamatory media campaigns orchestrated against the kingdom over the past four years, warning that Bahrain is still targeted in a bid to subvert its stability and derail its achievements and spark chaos in the region as whole. - TradeArabia News Service
