India plans online visas for GCC nationals

Manama, July 26, 2014

GCC nationals planning to travel to India could soon get visas online under a new system that is being rolled out by Indian authorities, a report said.

Indian Ambassador to Bahrain Dr Mohan Kumar said the Indian government was in the process of introducing e-visas for GCC nationals, said the report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister newspaper.

However, he said a timeframe for the implementation has still not been decided.

"GCC nationals will soon be able to get e-visas from the comfort of their homes with the introduction of a new electronic system, which is currently in process," he told the GDN.

"The Indian government has not yet announced dates of when it will be implemented as related matters get addressed. But it will be for a month that could be extended by double the period (two months)."

He was speaking during the monthly Open House at the embassy in Adliya yesterday.

Embassy first-secretary for labour and community welfare Ram Singh said the new system will help people as they no longer have to wait in queues at the embassy.

Singh revealed that up to 45 Bahrainis get visas to travel to India monthly. "We see an increase of up to 20 per cent during the summer months as Bahraini families travel to different regions in India," he said. - TradeArabia News Service
