Bahrain investigators working to help jailed expats

Manama, May 29, 2014

Investigators are working with foreign embassies to help resolve cases of expatriates who have completed their jail terms but are still detained for legal reasons.

The Interior Ministry's Ombudsman Office has received complaints from detainees, mainly Asians, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

"We did receive complaints from expatriates at the detention centre regarding allegations of ill treatment, proper health care, lack of facilities and other issues," said Al Ma'awada.

"Some of these inmates completed their sentences but because of legal reasons related to residence permit violations they were still in detention."

The Ombudsman plans to set up complaints boxes in all police stations, detention centres and other agencies of the Interior Ministry.

The boxes will be locked to ensure confidentiality and will be reviewed regularly by the Ombudsman staff. - TradeArabia News Service
