MANAMA, July 27, 2020

Batelco, Bahrain’s leading telecom provider, today announced a net profit attributable to equity holders of BD35.9 million ($95.2 million) for the first six months of 2020, an increase of 6% from BD34 million ($90.2 million) for the corresponding period of 2019.

Batelco Chairman Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa announced the half year financial results following the meeting of the Board of Directors ‪today (July 27)‬ at Batelco’s Hamala Headquarters. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Batelco earnings per share (EPS) for the first half is 21.7 fils, compared to an EPS of 20.5 fils for H1 2019. Total comprehensive income attributable to equity holders for H1 2020 is BD25.2 million ($66.8 million) a decrease of 27% from BD34.4M ($91.2 million) in H1 2019.

Revenues for H1 2020 were BD189.8 million ($503.4 million), a decrease of 6% when compared to BD201.7 million ($535 million) in H1 2019.  Consolidated revenues were impacted by the sale of Qualitynet, which contributed an additional BD11.4 million ($30.2 million) in 2019, the company said.

Operating profit is up by 16% to BD47.4 million ($125.7 million) in H1 2020 from BD40.9 million ($108.5 million) in H1 2019.

EBITDA increased by 10% in H1 2020 from BD74.4 million ($197.3 million) to BD81.8 million ($217 million) retaining a healthy EBITDA margin of 43%.  The improvement in EBITDA is mainly due to the 16% YoY reduction in operating expenses, the company said.

Batelco’s balance sheet remains strong with total equity attributable to equity holders of the company of BD467.6 million compared to BD473.1 million as of 31 December 2019, a decrease of 1%.  Total assets of BD979.0 million as of 30 June 2020 have decreased 1% compared to BD992.9 million as of 31 December 2019. Net assets as of 30 June 2020 stand at BD505.3 million compared to BD513.4 million as of 31 December 2019, a decrease of 2%. The company’s cash and bank balances are a substantial BD176.8 million, which reflects the 2019 final dividend of 17.5 fils per share paid in April 2020 and the BD178.3 million ($472.9 million) Batelco bond repayment in May 2020, the company said.

Despite the challenges presented by the Covid-19 situation during the first half of the year and its impact on the company’s operations, the Board of Directors approved an interim cash dividend for shareholders of 13.5 fils per share or 13.5% of paid up capital for the H1 2020, an increase of 35% over the interim cash dividend distributed for the same period of 2019. The decision is the result of the Board of Directors belief in the importance of supporting shareholders by injecting more liquidity in the market, it said.

The subscriber base of the company saw a decline of 8 per cent to 3.7 million in H1 2020 from 4 million in H1 2019. This excludes numbers  from Sabafon, Batelco’s associate company in Yemen, due to unreliability of information.

Shaikh Abdulla said: “We are pleased to report an increase in net profits, operating profits and EBITDA of 6%, 16% and 10% respectively in the first half of 2020, achieved through diligent management of our operational costs and supported by the implementation of the corporate objectives.
