Ooredoo, Ericsson partner in new Oman data initiative

MUSCAT, June 15, 2016

Ooredoo in Oman is set to start the trial of an innovative new telecommunications technology that addresses the anticipated surge in demand for data for video streaming, online gaming, social media and more across the sultanate.

The first of its kind in the region, the trial will test Microwave Solutions in E-Band (80 Ghz) technology, or microwave backhauling, across Ooredoo’s recently completed nationwide fibre backbone, providing the Gigabit capacity to deliver unparalleled premium speeds and unrivalled superior quality to fast increasing numbers of data hungry customers, said a statement.

The new initiative is supported by Oman's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), it said.

Ooredoo will collaborate with internationally renowned telecommunications giant Ericsson on this exciting project, sharing expertise and technical know-how to demonstrate the enormous advantages and possibilities of the innovative system to operators in the Gulf and beyond.

“Ooredoo is constantly responding to changes in customer needs and providing them with the products, services and offers they want, through both mobile and fixed offerings,” said Wolfgang Wemhoff, chief technology officer at Ooredoo Oman. “Our partnership with Ericsson on this regionally important ground-breaking project will allow us to pioneer new methods and deliver exciting new possibilities to meet the fast-evolving needs of our current and future customers and businesses in all sectors across the Sultanate of Oman.”

Rafiah Ibrahim, president and head of Ericsson Region Middle East and Africa, added: “We expect Microwave Backhaul to experience major growth and represent up to 20 percent of new deployments in 2020. Our collaboration with Ooredoo Oman enables us to showcase the benefits of Microwave Backhaul for operators around the region, while empowering Ooredoo Oman to pave the way for innovative traffic management solutions.”

Ooredoo is a leading data and internet services provider, focused on bringing new products and services to Oman and enriching the lives of the people of the sultanate through better communications services, the statement said. - TradeArabia News Service
