Mobily set for RCN commercial launch

RIYADH, May 23, 2015

Etihad Etisalat Company (Mobily), a leading Saudi-based mobile services operator, has announced the commercial launch of (RCN) FTTH high capacity UAE which connects the Middle East with Europe starting from Fujairah in the UAE passing through Riyadh and the capital of Jordan Amman.

The agreement involves allies of several telecom companies such as Mobily, UAE Etisalat Group, Zain Jordan Turkcell Super Online, Orange Jordan, and Syria Telecommunication.

The first phase of the operation will start from Fujairah through Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh and then Amman.

The 5,000-km-long regional cable will provide high capacities of data reaching 1.2 terabyte / second and from 10 GB duplicates as per Ethernet Protocol. The regional cable is likely to be extended to Turkey as soon as the political and social status settles down in Syria, said experts.

The project guarantees the possibility of reaching all sites along the track of the cable, even in case of the network failure, said a statement from Mobily.

The other developmental alternatives are available to extend the FTTH cable from Turkey to Europe through different terminals that already prepared and equipped on the Greek-Bulgarian borders with Turkey.

Deputy CEO Serkan Okandan said: "Mobily is today witnessing the transformation from a telecom service provider to an integrated ICT services provider, and that we are building a brighter future for the company and its customers."

"We are delighted to be a member in a group which includes the largest telecommunication companies in the region," he noted.

The original agreement charted out a 7,750-km-long round trip fiber optic cable line comprising two redundant fiber pairs with initial equipped capacity of 1.2Tbps and design capacity of 6.4Tbps fully redundant routes.-TradeArabia News Service
