Ooredoo’s fibre network customers reach 200,000

DOHA, December 18, 2014

Qatar’s leading telecommunications company Ooredoo has reached another another historic milestone with more than 200,000 customers in the country now connected to its fibre network.

Ooredoo’s achievement in providing Ooredoo Fibre – combined with its recent launch of 4G Plus (Advanced LTE) – means that Ooredoo customers can stay connected to the fastest-available Internet at home and while moving across the country, said a statement.

An official report from the UN Broadband Commission stated that, with 96.4 per cent penetration, Qatar has the second highest percentage of household broadband of any developing country, after South Korea.

Around 9,000 homes a month are now being linked to Ooredoo Fibre, supporting the spread of the knowledge-based economy.

Sheikh Saud Bin Nasser Al Thani, chief executive officer of Ooredoo Qatar, said: “As our community prepares to celebrate Qatar National Day together, I am proud that Ooredoo has lived up to its promise to connect people to the fastest-available Fibre network. Truly, the people of Qatar deserve the very best, which is why we have built this bigger, faster, better network and rolled it out across the country.”

Ooredoo Fibre has proven to be particularly popular because of Ooredoo’s capacity to deliver free and permanent speed upgrades for customers.

Earlier in the year, all 1Mbps plan customers enjoyed a ten time speed increase to 10Mbps, while 10Mbps customers were boosted to 25Mbps, with no additional charges.

To enable more people to keep track of Qatar’s “Fibre revolution”, Ooredoo has a real-time online fibre availability map, enabling customers to track the roll-out progress of the network.

The map is live on Ooredoo’s website and allows customers to find out whether they qualify to upgrade their service by checking if they are in a fibre-ready ‘Green’ area. - TradeArabia News Service
