Cyber crime, security in focus at conference
Dubai, July 4, 2013
The Middle East is well positioned to stem the tide of cyber crime as governments and corporations implement various counter-measures, said exhibitors and delegates at a conference held recently in Dubai.
The inaugural Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference (Gisec) 2013 was a platform focused to specifically address cyber security and hosted by the Dubai World Trade Centre, said a statement.
Leading companies and industry experts showcased the latest solutions to attendees hailing from about 18 countries, it said.
Kevin Mitnick, an ex-hacker and information security specialist, was the keynote speaker at the conference. He gave a live demonstration on how easy it is to circumvent security in banks, by calling an international bank and manipulating its automated helpline.
Regional companies signed several deals at the conference, to invest in information security, as new security packages were unveiled, covering areas such as cloud infrastructure, security frameworks and vendor network systems.
Trixee Loh, senior VP, DWTC, said: “The inaugural edition of Gisec is a significant milestone that has motivated regional and global organisations to become more proactive and tighten their information security measures due to the significant insights they have gained.”
A recurring theme in exhibitors’ feedback is that focusing exclusively on information security will bring more attention and awareness on critical threats, said the statement.
Najyb Al Maskari, chief information security officer of the Emirates Advanced Investments Group, said: “Gisec provided more than just discussions – it provided solutions. It is the most relevant event for information security as it brings together vendors, industry giants and IT influencers at one venue and for one unified purpose.”
The second edition of Gisec is set to take place from June 9 to 11 next year, it said. – TradeArabia News Service
