Shomookh to start Oman mining complex work in Q1

DUBAI, January 21, 2019

Oman-based Shomookh Mining Industries Company is set to start work on the development projects at its mining complex and also the Duqm Commercial Tourism Gate during the first quarter, said a report.

Phase One of the Shomookh Complex for Mining Industries will see tthe establishment of a factory for clinker production and another for calcium hydroxide, while the later stages will include a lime production plant and factories for dyes, glass, aluminium, waste containers, fertilizers and poultry, reported Times of Oman.

Construction will begin on the initial phase of the project over the next two months and is set to be completed by the year-end, stated the report, citing a senior official.

The complex, coming up in the Special Economic Zone in Duqm (SEZD) is a first-of-its-kind in the sultanate, remarked Ahmed bin Zayed bin Nasser Al Mahrami, the chairman of Bin Zayed International Investment Group and board of directors of Shomookh Mining Industries Company.

On the Duqm Commercial and Tourism Gate project, Al Mahrami said Phase One would include the establishment of a mall with a rental area of about 16,000 sq m, while the total area of the mall will be 32,000 sq m.

The mall will include a number of international brands that will open branches in Duqm for the first time, including Carrefour and Vox Cinema, which will have five theatres, Starbucks, Costa and other international brands for clothing, perfumes, electronics and some Arab, international, and fast food restaurants, stated Al Mahrami.

The mall will also include branches for three commercial banks, lounges for telecommunications companies, and 60 different stores, he added.

Phase One work includes setting up of a business centre equipped with all the administrative services needed by businesspersons and investors besides meeting rooms, including a hall that can accommodate 250 people in Duqm.

Phase Two of the Duqm Commercial Tourism Gate project will boast a hospital, water park and an international school, said the report. The work will begin at the start of 2020.

"The second stage will also include five residential towers with some 150 apartments that will provide foreign investors and businessmen wishing to stay in Duqm with what they look for in terms of comfortable accommodation in a distinctive location on Duqm beach opposite the Crowne Plaza Hotel," he added.
