Aramex names new chief digital officer

DUBAI, May 10, 2017

Aramex, a global provider of comprehensive logistics and transportation solutions, has appointed Oliver Barthel as its chief digital officer.

Based in Amman, Jordan, Barthel in the newly-created role in Aramex’s Leadership Team will be responsible for driving the company’s digital transformation plans to become a technology-based enterprise, said the company in a statement.

Barthel has over 25 years of international experience in information technology (IT), logistics, retail and transportation.

Joining Aramex from DB Cargo, a European logistics service provider and rail freight operator, he brings to his current role a wealth of knowledge in IT and business transformation, said the statement.

He will be critical to facilitating Aramex’s plans to further grow its e-commerce and digital capabilities while ensuring operations internally are continually transitioning to technology-based platforms.

From 2010 to 2017, Barthel held the position of chief information officer (CIO) at DB Cargo, it stated.

Barthel has also held a number of other senior roles across Europe. This includes senior project manager in the area of efficient consumer response and retail at Roland Berger and Partner, and vice president of Central and Eastern Europe at Intactix International (today part of JDA Software) a provider of category and floor and shelf space management solutions for retailers and consumer goods manufacturers.

In the early 2000s, he was the founder and CIO of an e-commerce startup in Munich, Germany, financed by venture capital firms and one of the top retailers in Europe.

He also has extensive experience from his apprenticeship at Siemens and a diverse range of part-time jobs and internships such as HP and AEG.

Barthel holds a degree in Applied Computer Science from the University of Bamberg, where he studied management and controlling, development of business information systems, and logistics and logistical computer science. He is a German National, fluent in English and also speaks French and Spanish, it stated. – TradeArabia News Service
