MANAMA, November 2, 2016

APM Terminals Bahrain, as part of its commitment to create sustainable future for the communities in which it operates, is contributing towards the education and training of the Bahraini youth in the field of maritime and logistics.

This initiative in collaboration with Bahrain Polytechnic, provides opportunities to support industry’s growing demand for quality maritime workforce and encourage new generation to pursue careers in this dynamic industry, said a statement from APM Terminals Bahrain.

The maritime sector is one of the key pillars of economic development for Bahrain and due to its ever-evolving maritime landscape, has a significant employment demand for highly-skilled maritime workforce at all levels, it said.

APM Terminals Bahrain is committed towards enhancing maritime education through its partnership with Bahrain Polytechnic, in an endeavour to prepare potential future workforce to further the development of the sector, it added.

Through this joint initiative, 36 students enrolled with Bahrain Polytechnic’s maritime course, will undergo theoretical and practical knowledge sessions on maritime logistics conducted by APM Terminals Bahrain senior management for a better understanding of Bahrain’s shipping industry and Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP) operations.

These lectures are delivered by the members of the senior management team of APM Terminals Bahrain who provide an up-to-date view of the relevant topics of study supported by their experience in the field. Some of these sessions will be executed on-site at Khalifa Bin Salman Port and the Bahrain Polytechnic campus and will include ‘Port Development and Planning’, ‘Passenger and Freight movements’, ‘Vessel types’, ‘Port and Custom Authorities’ and much more.

Mark Hardiman, CEO and managing director of APM Terminals Bahrain, said: “Education is one of the global strategic pillars for APM Terminals’ CSR initiatives, with trained workforce being an essential requirement of our maritime sector.”

“Through our educational collaborations, we are offering students a holistic view of the industry and its international guidelines while equipping them with technical knowledge that will better help prepare them for careers in this field,” he said.

“More importantly, it enables us to continue to attract and cultivate new talent, intensify employment possibilities and facilitate career paths for the Bahraini youth in maritime industry,” he added.

Dr John Webb, dean of the faculty of business and logistics at Bahrain Polytechnic, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for our students to study first-hand the key aspects of maritime and logistics industry including port operations and supply chains.”

“Most importantly, they will also gain industry insights from the experienced staff of APM Terminals. With on-port lectures organised by APM Terminals Bahrain, this will be a real-time learning for our students, helping them become more aware of the industry and choose for themselves various career options and area of specialisation they would like to pursue in future.”

Moreover, the company also runs an internship programme, the Graduate Programme which since 2014 has hosted over 40 internships with full-term employments offered to best performing candidates.
