Coalesse launches new 'ultra lightweight' chair in Dubai

DUBAI, October 25, 2016

US-based Coalesse, a leading furniture company, has collaborated with Michael Young to design the LessThanFive Chair, which is currently being showcased at Downtown Dubai exhibition, in Dubai, UAE.

Coalesse is a brand which is part of Steelcase, a leading office furniture solutions provider in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

The new chair is an object of top craftsmanship and handcrafted from carbon fibre, a new entrant in the furniture industry and one of the strongest and lightest materials currently available, said a statement from the company.

The chair also supports a variety of users while weighing less than 5 pounds (2kg), it added.

The chair, which will be on display in Dubai until October 28, is made entirely from moulded and heated layers of carbon fibre, it said.

The chair’s manufacturing process includes astute handwork to assemble and finish each tooled component, from the digital design through to the final product.

A visualisation tool for LessThanFive engages customers via an online web-based platform, allowing complete customisation and personalisation over the chair’s colour design with a few easy clicks of a screen.

Customers are able to import any colour combination and configure any pattern on to the pre-defined areas of the chair.

John Hamilton, director of design at Coalesse, said: “We are experiencing a resurgence of an artisan age where a desire for hand selected ingredients, slower cultivation and bespoke craftsmanship is prevailing.”

“With carbon fibre surfaces proving highly receptive to paint finishes and appliques, and modern technology allowing our customers to curate nearly every aspect of the LessThanFive chair design experience; we are empowering personal expression and encouraging a more active era of participation by the design community,” he said.

"We wanted to design a carbon fibre chair that is truly functional and ergonomic," added LessThanFive designer, Michael Young.

The chair will be available in six standard colours and finishes, including matte blue, red fade, light and dark fades, copper gloss, and carbon weave, it stated. – TradeArabia News Service
