Acwa commissions Moroccan solar power plant

RABAT, February 11, 2016

Morocco’s first solar power plant, built by an international consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power, was  recently inaugurated at a location about 20 km from the city of Ouarzazate, a report said.

The Noor1 project is expected to provide one million Moroccan homes with electricity by 2018, reported Arab News.

“We are proud to mention that 75 per cent of the manpower working to finish this plant are Moroccans,” Mohammed Abu Nayyan, chairman of Acwa Power International was quoted as saying.

Noor 1 produces solar power with an electricity production capacity of 160 MW, the report said.

Other phases — Noor 2 and Noor 3 — are expected to follow this year, the report said, adding that once all phases are completed, the project will be the largest concentrated solar power plant in the world that will produce 500 megawatts of electricity.
