$25bn PROJECT

Arep ... to redevelop three main railway stations in Iran

French consultant Arep wins Iran rail contract

TEHRAN, July 7, 2015

French consultant Arep has won the first contract in the $25-billion Iranian rail programme, said a report.

The deal worth $8 million has been awarded to Arep for the redevelopment of three main railway stations in Iran, reported the Global Construction Review.

Iran Railways plans to build an integrated system with each station acting as a hub for several modes of transport, stated the report.

The work involves the rebuilding of stations in the capital Tehran and the cities of Qom and Mashhad, the report said, citing a senior official.

"Tehran railway station is 80 years old now, and it is not compatible with present-day needs," stated Etienne Tricaud, the head of Arep’s board of directors.

"We have to present a comprehensive plan for 170 ha of land at this station so that high-speed inner-city and suburban trains, as well as electric and metro trains, can transport passengers in the city centre," noted Tricaud.

For Mashhad, in the extreme north-east of Iran, Arep will refurbish the station and design two terminals to increase its capacity, he added.

Qom station, about 100 km south of Tehran, will be revamped to operate high-speed trains on the 400 km Tehran-Isfahan line, said the report.

Work on this $2.7-billion line has already started. It is being built by China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) in co-operation with Iran’s Khatam Al Anbia Construction and is scheduled for completion in 2019.

The Arep win marks a return of European companies to Iran in anticipation of the lifting of sanctions, and the prospect of a $25-billion programme of rail upgrades over the next seven years, said the report.

Iran currently has contracts with Germany’s Siemens and France’s Alstom to build locomotives, it added.
