PEIE in $152m deals to develop industrial estates in Oman

MUSCAT, April 15, 2015

Oman’s Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) has signed deals worth RO59 million ($152.7 million) to develop the Samayil and Sohar industrial estates, according to a report.

The work at the estates, which will dedicate 10 per cent of the area in the estate for small and medium enterprises, will be completed in about 18 months, said the Oman Daily Observer report.

The first agreement worth at RO39.5 million ($102.6 million) was signed with Larsen and Toubro - Oman for infrastructure works at Samayil Industrial Estate in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate , it said.

The project will include the development of infrastructure facilities at the estate covering a total area of 753 hectares, divided into 548 hectares for the first phase and 205 hectares for the second phase. It will also include road works of around 46.2 km in length in the two phases.

It also comprises installation of services, such as water lines, electricity, rainwater drainage, telecommunication and setting up of two sewage stations with a capacity of 3,600 cu m in the first phase and further 1,500 cu m per day in the second phase.

The project will also consist of two water storage reservoirs with a capacity of 2,500 cu m per day for each.

The second agreement was signed with Hasan Juma Backer Trading and Contracting Company for developing the seventh phase of Sohar Industrial Estate at an estimated cost of RO19.6 million ($50.9 million).

The project encompasses development of the seventh phase of the estate on a total area of 876 hectares. It will include 36-km-road adjustment and pavement, infrastructure services, such as water lines, electricity, and establishment of a sewage plant with a capacity of 2,000 cu m per day.

“The two companies have to provide PEIE with outsourcing reports for SMEs. The industrial estates are witnessing significant expansion and a study is on to come up with new industrial estates in Ibri and Barka,” Ahmed bin Hassan Al Dheeb, under-secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and chairman of PEIE, was quoted as saying.
