UAE to become logistics hub for pharmaceutical firms

DUBAI, September 28, 2014

Leading international pharmaceutical companies have agreed to make the UAE their logistics hub for the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region, a senior official has revealed.

The UAE Ministry of Health officials recently met about 100 directors of international drugs companies, representatives of local factories and authorised drug agents in the UAE to discuss cooperation, the Gulf News reported.

The companies promised to set up offices in the country with up to 500 employees, Dr Ameen Hussain Al Amiri, assistant undersecretary for public health and licensing and vice-chairman of the drug pricing and registration higher committee, was quoted as saying by the report.

The companies will establish their logistics hub in the various free zones of the country, Dr Al Amiri said.

Dr Al Amiri said the recent meeting also targeted cutting the prices of 422 drugs produced by 41 companies in Europe, US and Australia. The new price cuts will be implemented on January 1 next year.
