MANAMA, September 11, 2014

Bahrain-based Gulf Petrochemicals Industries Co (GPIC) has released a new report setting set down the company's long-term sustainability goals aimed at improving environmental, health, safety, economic and social performance.

The Sustainability Report 2014 exemplifies the company's approach to sustainability and corporate social responsibility, GPIC president Dr Abdulrahman Jawahery was quoted as saying by the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

"Our theme for the year is 'building a greener future' which enables us to operate safely, profitably and with care for future generations.

"Through the sharing of information and a rigorous system of checklists, performance indicators and verification procedures, GPIC is looking to demonstrate how its health, safety and environmental performance has improved over the years, and to develop policies for further improvement," he added.

The goals are: Expand the use of renewable energy; phase out ozone depleting and global warming potential hydrochlorofluorocarbons including R-22 as refrigerants; reduce greenhouse gas emission levels; optimise energy consumption so every saleable tonne of product is attained within the target level of energy consumption; reduce water consumption; achieve zero lost time accidents and achieve zero cases of non-compliance with environmental legislation.

It also includes to achieve a yearly target of qualifying local talent to take responsible positions; strategic philanthropy through contibutions to non-gvernmental organisations, educational institutions and charity organisations; environmental awareness lectures for schools; implementation of universally accepted principles of UN Global Compact; optimising plants (ammonia, methanol and urea) availability and maintain financial health of the company. – TradeArabia News Service
