RTA in pact with varsity to back Dubai Metro

Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has made a contract with the Institute of Railway Technology at the Monash University, Australia for providing technical support to the Dubai Metro infrastructure up to the end of 2014.

Under the Agreement the two parties will team in developing the optimal wheel-rail interface to ensure sustainability.

Ahmed Al-Shareef, director of Rail Maintenance, RTA Rail Agency, said: “The agency is keen on entering in multiple agreements and broadening the scope of cooperation with various specialized entities within the realms of their respective domains.”

“This agreement has been made with the Australian Monash University as it has a dedicated railway institute of technology in order to work out the optimal wheel-rail interface which will substantially contribute to sustainability for years to come, step up safety levels and curb the risks of derailment and accidents.”

“The Institute of Railway Technology at the Monash University, Australia has been selected in view of its immense expertise and long-standing tradition in applied rail engineering researches & technology development worldwide. Moreover, the University ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide specifically in wheel-rail interface, and the Institute boasts of designing about 80 per cent or more of wheel-rail interfaces in the Down Under, Hong Kong or Singapore.

“The RTA will work with specialists of the Institute of Railway Technology over two phases; the first; which has been accomplished, focused on potential obstacles associated with the wheel-rail interface section. The second phase will see the compilation of a report depicting the optimal engineering section of the wheel-rail interface, monitoring the supervision process of developing the optimal section, and verifying the compliance with the set specifications,” he added.

“This agreement is poised to open up new horizons for cooperation with the University in a whole cast of fields related to engineering & applied researches as regards the rail infrastructure to ensure optimal sustainability of the infrastructure of the Dubai Metro,” Al-Shareef concluded. – TradeArabia News Service
