Canada to set up $272m specialist hospital in Sharjah

SHARJAH, September 13, 2017

Sharjah has reached an agreement with Canadian authorities for setting up a hospital specialising in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and a research centre dedicated to childhood illnesses at a cost of Dh1 billion ($272 million).

The deal comes as part of a MoU signed between the two governments to boost co-operation and advance the emirate’s medical services besides specific knowledge sharing between medical specialists, technicians, doctors and nurses, said the Emirati news agency Wam.

Under the MoU, the Canadian government and Sharjah will set out a range of action plans and strategies for healthcare-related investment projects in order to provide the highest level of care for mothers and children.

"It truly reflects the UAE’s approach to activate international relations in terms of the health sectors," remarked Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of HH Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, after signing the agreement with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, TCS.

"Sharjah regards medical excellence as one of its primary priorities and is committed to achieving an unrivalled healthcare environment, from infrastructure and health facilities to management strategies and elite medical staff," she stated.

"The dedication to the quality of healthcare is not only reflected in the level of services and quality of treatment, as it also illustrates the emirate’s forward-thinking mindset, based on investment in human capital and the provision of a healthcare legacy for future generations," she added.

This comes as part of joint efforts by Sharjah and Canada to open up channels of investment in medical projects, exchange expertise and further advance the quality of healthcare in compliance with international standards, said the Wam report.

Sharjah has made great strides in developing its healthcare sector, most notably the recent announcement of Sharjah Healthcare City which will cover an area of 2.4 million sq m, it stated.

The first phase of the project is valued at Dh600 million ($163 million) , and the city is expected to be completed by 2020, it added.
