Action on Diabetes screen 2,500 people for diabetes in Qatar

DOHA, June 26, 2015

Action on Diabetes, a public-private partnership initiated and funded by Maersk Oil Qatar, has joined forces with leading supermarket chain in the country Al Meera Consumer Goods Company, to screen as many as 2,500 people for diabetes in just five days in the run up to Ramadan this year.

It also offered advice on healthy lifestyles and safe fasting for people with diabetes, said a statement.

The partnership with Al Meera, which is in its second year, saw Action on Diabetes screening booths staffed by trained diabetes nurses and educators set up at three of Al Meera’s stores – Airport, Mansoura and Muraikh – to screen shoppers during the busy pre-Ramadan rush.

All those that were screened received a personalised analysis of results, along with recommendations on how to fast safely during Ramadan and reduce the risk of developing diabetes in the future.

Brochures and educational information were also distributed at each location to provide shoppers with vital information on diabetes, the importance of early detection and tips on living a healthy lifestyle.

Dr Mohammed Nasser Al Qahtani, Al Meera deputy chief executive officer, said: “We are very pleased to be working with Action on Diabetes, and are proud of the success we have achieved together over the past two years.

“We have raised the level of health awareness among consumers with regards to managing diabetes and eating healthy during the holy month. At Al Meera, we prioritize our consumers’ health and are continuously striving to achieve the best food safety practices.”

Ahmed Al Kuwari, technical liaison manager at Maersk Oil Qatar, said: “Maersk Oil Qatar is a proud partner of Action on Diabetes and is committed to playing a role in combating one of the most prevalent health issues in Qatar.

“We were delighted to see such large numbers of people screened at Action on Diabetes booths placed at Al Meera branches around Doha. We hope that this educated the community around safe and healthy fasting during Ramadan.

“Action on Diabetes is just one of numerous health schemes under our social investment programme - Action for Qatar – which is focused on delivering positive benefits for the local community in Qatar.”

Herluf Nis Thomsen, Action on Diabetes programme manager, said: “We are delighted that the screenings with Al Meera have been a great success. We hope to have helped spread more knowledge and awareness about diabetes, as early detection is of vital importance in the prevention and management of diabetes.” - TradeArabia News Service
