Qatar Foundation to set up new hospital in Italy

ITALY, May 28, 2015

Qatar Foundation Endowment (QFE) and Luigi Maria Monti Foundation have announced plans to set up a specialised hospital and medical research centre at Olbia in the Italian city of Sardinia.

Following the signing for the acquisition of the site in Olbia by QFE through its European investment platform, Luigi Maria Monti Foundation and QFE plan to complete and fully fit-out the existing property.

The first phase of The Mater Olbia Hospital is scheduled to open at the end of 2015.

Reverend Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, chairman of the Luigi Maria Monti Foundation, said: “I’m pleased that the Luigi Maria Monti Foundation has been invited to collaborate in the management of this investment, in-line with our commitment in healthcare. This is a landmark investment and a vote of confidence from one of the most respected investors in the world.  We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with QFE.”

Dr Mariella Enoc, president of the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital, said: “Mater Olbia hospital will provide significant opportunities to local residents, both from a healthcare and employment perspective. We are glad to be part of this program, with such high-quality partners. As a leading operator of children's hospitals at a national and international level, our duty will be to ensure the clinical management of the pediatric department of the new Mater Olbia hospital".

Mater Olbia hospital will provide high-quality care for residents of Sardinia and the wider region, with 290 new hospital beds, serving both public and private patients. Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù, a world class hospital ‎group, will manage the paediatric department of the hospital.

Mater Olbia Hospital will offer a wide range of services including cardiovascular, neurological, orthopaedic and paediatric specialities, as well as a rehabilitation centre.  It is envisaged that Mater Olbia Hospital will be Istituto Di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico and Joint Commission International accredited – the first such facility in Sardinia.  Studies will also be conducted on certain lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, which are common to the people of both Sardinia and the Middle East.

Furthermore, Mater Olbia Hospital will develop a network of close strategic alliances with a variety of leading hospitals and research centres, including:

  • Sidra Hospital, a Centre of Research and Care for Women and Children in Doha, Qatar,
  • Hamad Medical Corporation, the principal healthcare provider in Qatar,
  • Research centres within Qatar Foundation (including its worldwide research network),
  • Research centres of the Universities of Sassari and Cagliari, and
  • Research centres within Sardinia and Italy.

Rashid Al-Naimi, chief executive officer at QFE, said: “We are delighted that our investment received overwhelming support from the Italian authorities. This is a great investment opportunity for QFE as we firmly believe Mater Olbia Hospital will become a world-class hospital and medical research centre, benefitting patients in Sardinia and all around the world.”  - TradeArabia News Service
