AMZ to launch 2nd phase of polio campaign in UAE

AJMAN, January 9, 2015

Ajman Medical Zone (AMZ) is set to launch a two-week long second phase of the anti-polio campaign in the emirate, as part of the National Polio Campaign, according to a report.

The first phase of the campaign, which took place in November for two weeks, had delivered polio vaccine to 19,972 children, achieving a success rate of 106 per cent, said the Emirates News Agency (WAM) report.

The campaign, which is being organised by the Ministry of Health in partnership with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD), is targeting as many as 416,000 children under the age of five years, it said.

Each child will be given two drops and there are no side effects of the vaccination, said the report.

The children who missed the first dose of the vaccine can also take the second dose, it said.

The vaccine will be administered free of charge at six clinics across the emirates, with the private health sector also involved in the campaign where parents can take their children to the GMC hospital to get the vaccine, it added.
