Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi

Burjeel fitness centre plays vital role in athlete’s recovery

ABU DHABI, September 23, 2014

Athlete Omer Yousif Al Hosani, who underwent an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, is back on the football pitch. He credits his fast return to the Burjeel Fitness Centre, housed inside Abu Dhabi’s tertiary healthcare facility, Burjeel Hospital.

The ACL is one of the four main ligaments in the knee and helps with lower body movement. The ligament cannot be repaired through stitches since these have been shown to fail over time. Instead the ACL is replaced by a substitute graft made of tendon.  After surgery, the patient undergoes physical therapy with exercises.

“During the first 10 to 14 days, the wound is kept clean and dry, with emphasis placed on regaining the ability to fully straighten the knee and restore quadriceps control,” said Hamza Ayyad, Burjeel fitness centre manager. “Once this is achieved, focus is shifted to reducing knee swelling, maintaining mobility of the kneecap to prevent anterior knee pain problems, and strengthening the quadriceps and hamstring muscles. This rehabilitation process requires focus, determination, and commitment since the treatment course can be long.”

“At Burjeel Fitness Centre, we work with members to ensure long-term wellness strategies. A major component of this strategy is our Technogym Key System (TGS), which is programmed to address the specific requirements of every member.  It has a memory chip that stores data including individualised training programmes and medical history,” said Ayyad.

In addition to TGS, experts at the fitness centre provide personalised training programs, understanding that each person’s requirements and physiology are different. Furthermore, members can enjoy one-to-one consultation with a clinical nutritionist to ensure tailor-made diet plans, to complement the full fitness regime. – TradeArabia News Service
