Dewa commissions 11 substations worth $668m in H1

DUBAI, July 18, 2022

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) said it has commissioned a new 400/132 kV substation in Al Qusais Industrial Area 5 and ten 132/11 kV substations in various parts of the emirate during the first half of 2022 at a total cost of AED1.715 million ($668 million).

These substations have a total conversion capacity of 3,500 megavolt-amperes (MVA). To connect them to Dewa's network, around 100 km of 132kV underground cables and 400 kV overhead lines have already been installed, said a statement from the Dubai utility.

The substation projects were completed with over 21 million man hours without lost time incidents (LTI) in accordance with the highest standards of security, health, and safety, it added.

These projects were implemented in line with Dewa’s efforts to provide an advanced infrastructure that keeps pace with the increasing demand for energy in Dubai, said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dewa.

Al Tayer pointed out that Dewa had earmarked investments worth AED10 billion for electricity transmission projects between 2021 and 2024. This includes AED2 billion for 400 kV transmission projects and AED8 billion for 132 kV projects.

He stated that Dewa intends to increase the capacity of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution networks based on the demand forecast up to 2031. These plans are implemented according to the highest quality standards while optimising resources.

Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power, said that the new substations have been implemented according to the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and safety, using the latest digital technologies for transmission stations.

Following their commissioning, the total number of 400 kV substations currently in service across Dubai has increased to 26, and the number of 132 kV substations stands at 329.

The 400/132 kV substation was constructed in Al Qusais Industrial Area 5, while the 132/11 kV substations are located in Al Barsha South, Jebel Ali, Al Furjan, Al Merkad, Business Bay, Umm Hurair, Wadi Al Safa, Oud Al Muteena, Al Riqqa, and Al Wasl, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
