Enoc completes construction of its Expo 2020 pavilion

DUBAI, February 1, 2021

Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc) Group, the official integrated energy partner of Expo 2020 Dubai, has announced that the construction of its pavilion for the mega event has been completed eight months ahead of schedule.

The 2,060-sq-m pavilion, set up under the theme of ‘Reimagine Energy,’ comprises five distinct structures. It has been built using 700 tonnes of steel to minimise waste and environmental impact, and to promote environmental sustainability.

The use of steel in the construction of the pavilion will also allow for further reuse of the pavilion buildings and return the site to its original state when Expo concludes in 2022, said the statement from Enoc.

The pavilion has been constructed to meet sustainability and design standards put forward by the Expo 2020 team, integrating legacy into the build plan by focusing on local and recyclable materials.

The construction of the pavilion was completed in record time despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, it added.

Group CEO Saif Humaid Al Falasi said: “As the official integrated energy partner of Expo 2020 Dubai, we are presenting an innovative and fully immersive experience at our pavilion that challenges the conventional understanding of energy and offers inspiring insights on how we can all come together and collectively think about what will shape the future of energy."

Al Falasi said the architectural theme of the pavilion draws on the design of oil storage tanks with five distinct structures, including four ‘houses’ taking visitors on an unprecedented multi-sensory journey through four distinctive narratives: Discovery – what energy is; Harness – what energy enables; Collaborate – what energy needs; and Reimagine – what energy promises. Every visitor, irrespective of age, will be inspired in the pavilion’s experiential offering – which will inform, educate, engage and entertain.

It also features a dedicated space for government and industry stakeholders to engage in finding answers to the industry’s unanswered questions.

Lauding the key milestone, Expo 2020 Dubai Chief Financial Officer Mukhtar Safi said: "Through the impressive Enoc pavilion, millions of visitors will be able to discover best-in-class integrated energy solutions that will leave a meaningful impact long after Expo 2020 Dubai closes its doors."

"Taking visitors on an inspiring journey that showcases the role of energy in our past, present and future, the pavilion will open new windows of engagement on the evolution of the sector. A tour of the pavilion will offer visitors 18 minutes of unprecedented experiences that draw on the many facets of the overarching theme, ‘Reimagine Energy.’," he added.

According to him, Enoc’s pavilion was built in line with best industry practices to enhance sustainability and conserve energy consumption.

"This includes the installation of a mixed mode functional design for HVAC systems that minimises the pavilion’s energy consumption by 20.1% lower than ASHRAE 90.1 benchmark assessment. In addition, the pavilion has achieved reduction of 30% in potable water demand as per DEWA guidelines," he explained.

Enoc Group also unveiled plans for a new concept design service station on the Expo 2020 site that will be built on the exoskeleton of a Ghaf tree structure.

"Despite the challenges faced, our team worked around the clock, following all safety protocols to deliver a state-of-the-art pavilion that will offer visitors an unforgettable experience, that will inspire and encourage them to rethink about what energy is, the potential it holds and how it can change our lives," he added.
