Oman underground dam project 42pc completed

MUSCAT, June 11, 2019

Omani authorities said work is progressing well on an underground water recharge dam project in the sultanate's North Al Sharqiya governorate with nearly 42 per cent of the project construction already completed.

The 1,860-m-long and 5.5-m-tall dam, on completion, will boast a total capacity of  734,000 cu m, reported Times of Oman.

This comes as part of the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources’ efforts for optimal utilisation of rainwater and supply of underground wells with water and in preservation of underground water to feed underground reservoirs and protection of some areas from the risk of floods, it stated.

On the progress, the ministry said it had completed all geotechnical works, the protection works and the foundations works.

Work is also under way at the Wadi Al Saleef underground water recharge dam, which will be 3.2 km long and 8.6 m tall, in the governorate of Al Dhahirah, said the report.

Around 32 per cent of the construction has been completed on the underground dam, which has a capacity of about 1 million cu m, it added.
