Empower in bid to cut district cooling consumption

DUBAI, June 10, 2019

Dubai-based Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world's largest district cooling services provider, has launched a campaign to support sustainability and deliver environment-friendly district cooling services.

The summer campaign, launched under the slogan ‘Switch to 24 deg C and save more’ runs from June till end of summer, reported state news agency Wam.

The campaign helps customers to reduce their district cooling energy consumption during the summer period by encouraging them to set the AC thermostat to 24 deg C, to reduce cost, promote environmental conservation, save energy, and protect resources, to achieve the transition to a green community.

Empower highlighted that setting the AC thermostat to 24 deg C is the optimum temperature for ideal cooling, which in turn reduces pressure on the air conditioner, reduces the consumption bill, and significantly reduces carbon emissions; thereby limiting global warming.

The campaign targets end-users of residential and commercial projects covered by Empower’s services, which currently exceeds 100,000 customers. The company is also committed to constantly launch campaigns to raise awareness and enhance the customer participation, to achieve sustainable development.

"Saving on district cooling energy, especially in summer, contributes to the conservation of natural resources and the protection of the environment. Empower constantly strives to contribute to reducing energy consumption and adopts sustainable solutions based on the green economy, to support the ‘Green Economy for Sustainable Development’ initiative,” said Ahmad bin Shafar, CEO of Empower.

“Launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and adopted by the Government of Dubai, the initiative aims to reduce the impact of climate change, ensure a better future for generations to come by reducing electricity and water consumption by 30 percent, and making Dubai a global hub for green economy, as well as the city with the lowest carbon footprint by 2050.

"Through this campaign, Empower aims to educate the public about the importance of rationalisation to conserve natural resources and achieve sustainable development," added Bin Shafar.

"Empower’s total energy savings reached 1,160 MW and worth Dh3 billion ($816,000), at the end of 2018. We aim to increase this by the end of 2019," noted Bin Shafar.

Empower provides district cooling services to more than 1,090 buildings, catering to more than 100,000 customers. The company operates more than 1.43 million refrigeration tons (RT), providing environment-friendly district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments.
