Gulf War bombs found at Kuwait building site

KUWAIT, July 5, 2017

Unexploded bombs from what was known as the "Highway of Death" in the 1991 Gulf War have been found at a housing project site on Kuwait's Highway 80, which connects the city to the Iraqi border, said a report.

The "Highway of Death" got its name when US-led coalition aircraft bombed a convoy of fleeing Iraqi forces, killing hundreds and leaving behind hundreds of burned-out vehicles.

These bombs were uncovered by the construction crew working on a $950-million residential project on Wednesday, according to AP, citing Kuwait's Public Authority of Housing Welfare.

"Finding explosives on the site is not surprising and more could be there," the state-run Kuwait News Agency quoted officials as saying.

A military bomb squad would immediately start defusing the ordinance found along Kuwait's Highway 80, they added.
