Omani house owners face action over 'illegal alterations'

MUSCAT, January 23, 2017

The municipal authorities in Oman's capital Muscat have started cracking down on property owners and contractors for carrying out unauthorised alterations in their buildings, said a report.

The changes without adhering to the civic laws can lead to health and safety issues, risking the lives of residents, reported the Oman Observer, citing a top official.

"No alterations, external or internal, will be allowed without permission from the authorities. There is no meaning in blaming the civic authorities in the event of fatalities caused by illegal constructions," remarked Salim Al Ghamari, Municipal Councillor from Muttrah.

The stern action from the Muscat Municipality comes following a number of 'alteration' cases involving residential, industrial and commercial buildings in the capital.

"These violations not only endanger the structural integrity of the buildings but also affect the aesthetic beauty of the city. Unauthorised changes in buildings can lead to lack of fire exits and non-adherence to health and safety requirements in terms of ventilation and lighting," noted Al Ghamari.

As per the Muscat Municipality Building Regulation Act, no changes can be carried out on the approved permit, drawings or any other official document unless prior approval is obtained.

“Although the initial decision is to impose a fine of RO5,000 ($12,944) on violators, what is desired is more stringent actions like jail terms,” he added.
