RTA plans new EC3 project for Dubai Expo 2020

DUBAI, June 13, 2016

Dubai's Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) is set to start work on a new 6,996-sq-m Enterprise Command & Control Center (EC3) building to be built at a cost of Dh335 million ($91 million) ahead of Expo 2020.

The RTA announcement comes following the endorsement of the EC3 model's design by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.

Sheikh Mohammed issued directives for the speedy construction and the timely delivery of this unique structure which will be capable of providing integrated management of mobility and public transport systems required for the Expo 2020, said a statement from RTA.

The Dubai ruler also called upon the authorities to utilise the latest smart technologies, and ensure that the system remains flexible to accommodate and catch up with the rapid technological advancements.

According to RTA, the centre features a design rendering it one of Dubai city landmarks. The building, which is branded EC3 consists of a ground floor and five storeys with a total floor area of 10,900 sq m.

The new command centre will help the RTA to provide integrated management of mobility and public transport systems required for mega events like the Expo 2020.

It will also ease traffic congestions, reduce transit time and cost, fend off traffic accidents, and curb environmental pollution through adopting smart planning in addressing transport challenges of the emirate, said the statement.

The central control room covers an area of 430 sq m and rises 13 m in height. The facilities comprise office spaces, auditorium, press centre and four utility buildings, it stated.

Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors of RTA, said: "The EC3 would conform to the green building codes and would be qualified for the Green Buildings Certification – Gold Rating."

“The centre will act as a unified platform linking various control centers of RTA’s operational agencies such as Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, Public Transport, Taxis, and Traffic Systems Control Centers with an integrated central control unit."

"Such a unit will be linked with all its agencies in the initial phase, and with all external entities associated with the business of RTA later on," stated Al Tayer.

The centre will be the first of its kind in the Middle East in controlling, integrating and co-ordinating various transit modes besides undertaking sound planning of various mobility challenges for RTA," noted Al Tayer.

It will also prop up RTA’s efforts towards transforming Dubai into the smartest city worldwide in the field of transport, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
