EmiratesGBC discusses key renewable energy technologies

DUBAI, January 24, 2016

Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) recently hosted a workshop in Dubai, UAE, where leading industry experts discussed the current challenges the industry faces when trying to install renewable energy technologies in high-rise buildings.

An independent forum aimed at conserving the environment by strengthening and promoting green building practices, EmiratesGB regularly hosts and participates in multinational events, conferences and forums.

The organisation has also developed a suite of activities, inclusive of networking events, technical workshops, focus days and facilitated training based around specific issues related to the built-environment that meet the needs of its members, of the UAE community, and the wider Middle East.

With the UAE’s skyline dominated by skyscrapers, with Dubai alone being home to over 3000 high-rise buildings in 30 km radius, the EmiratesGBC workshop addressed some of the current challenges the industry faces when trying to install renewable energy technologies in high-rise buildings.

"The UAE hosts over 66 per cent of the total current number of skyscrapers in the Middle East region, so it is important that we pay special attention to this type of construction," remarked Saeed Al Abbar, the chairman of EmiratesGBC, citing the data from Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

"If we want to promote energy efficiency in urban environments, we need to understand the challenges associated with retrofitting the facades and MEP systems of existing buildings to make them more sustainable as well as incorporating renewable energy technologies into the building," he noted.

According to him, the workshop discussed the opportunities and challenges for installing renewable energy systems in high-rise buildings with a concerted focus on the design and building retrofit methods used to overcome these challenges.

"As an independent forum promoting sustainability, we are always seeking ways to connect with all industry stakeholders to provide benchmarks and guidelines to facilitate sustainable development," he stated.

"The World Future Energy Summit provided the perfect platform for us to share our expertise in the building sector and discuss with our peers how to implement key sustainability and renewable technologies into the construction and retrofit of high-rise buildings," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
