Experts discuss ways to tap ME energy potential

Leading global experts presented power development opportunities and also provided insights to capitalise on the region’s energy potential at a key summit held recently in Doha.

The Power Qatar Summit 2015 was held under the patronage of Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) at The Ritz-Carlton, Doha.
 
The progress and future of the power sector and plans to promote renewable energy resources in Qatar were discussed by industry experts at the two-day event.

The summit featured more than 20 keynote sessions, presentations, panel discussions and key networking opportunities, making it a one-stop platform to discuss new developments in the GCC power, said the event organisers Expotrade.

Brad Hariharan, the regional director, Expotrade Middle East, said: "We are delighted about the success of the Power Qatar summit. It lived up to its promise of providing actionable insights to boost the power sector in the region."

The key speakers on the opening day included Saleh Hamad Al Marri, the head of Renewable Energy Technologies, Kahramaa who spoke on the body’s prospective projects for solar energy.

Hashim Al Zahrani, head of ICC, GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) shed light on the first 400-kV super grid commissioned by GCCIA, that links the power network of the Gulf countries on one unified grid.

Faisal Rashid, the director, Demand Side Management, Dubai Supreme Council of Energy outlined Dubai Demand Side Management Strategy 2030; while Philippe Freyssinet, director, Energy and Environment, Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) brought to the fore QNRF’s actions on clean energy technologies.

Additionally, a panel discussion reviewed the challenges facing solar industry growth and the role of solar energy in sustainable city development, said the organisers.

The Day Two saw speakers such as Walid Al Deghaili, energy sector expert at the sustainable development policies division of UN-ESCWA, presenting ideas on water use for energy followed by Jan Schoenig, the program manager, at Major Events, Siemens Qatar putting spotlight on new products, systems and solutions in the area of energy transmission, distribution and energy efficiency.-TradeArabia News Service
