Oman to float tender to develop water desalination plants

Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is set to float a prequalification tender to build several new water desalination plants across the sultanate, according to a report.
It will include one each in Salalah and Sharqiyah regions, said the Times of Oman report.
The request for qualification (RFQ) tender, which will be announced soon, will be for building several projects, including the proposed Salalah and Sharqiyah desalination projects, with a capacity of 22 million gallons per day (mgd) and 17.6 mgd, respectively.
This is aimed at meeting the growing demand for water in different regions, it said.
“In addition, depending on the progress of government approvals, additional projects may be included within the RFQ including Duqm IWP (independent water project) with water capacity up-to 13.2 mgd,” an OPWP statement was quoted as saying.
A commerical operation date for the plants is being targets for early 2019 for Salalah IWP and the second quarter of 2020 for Sharqiyah IWP, to meet the increase in demand for potable water, it added.
