Qatar is carrying out major road projects.

Key Qatar highway project on target

DOHA, July 30, 2015

Work on seven new bridges on the Al Wakrah parallel road project in Qatar is in the final phase of completion, a report said.

About 77 per cent of the pillars are ready, said a report in Al Sharq.

Construction work on the Al Wakrah parallel road development began in September last year.

The QR2.18-billion ($600 million) project, a part of the Public Works Authority’s (Ashghal) key highways project, is expected to be completed by 2018.

The road is a 11-km stretch with five lanes on both sides. The project also includes pedestrian crossings, bridges and separate lanes for motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians in addition to a tunnel.

The new road aims to reduce traffic jams in Al Wakrah city as it is connected with several vital areas, especially Hamad International Airport and roads from the northwest of Qatar.

The QR40-billion ($10.98 billion) highway project of Ashghal includes 30 main roads and highways and is undertaken by 46 contractors. It includes the building of 1,000 km of roads, 360 bridges and 240 main intersections in Doha and other towns.

The project also includes integrated sewage networks, electricity, smart transportation systems, lights and signals, in addition to drinking water and drainage networks.

Thirty of the projects are currently under way, and the remaining are in the design stages with tenders having been announced for several others.
