RTA eyes 421-km Dubai Metro tracks by 2030

DUBAI, June 14, 2015

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has set an ambitious plan to extend the metro tracks to 110 km by 2020, then take it further to 200 km by 2025 and finally double up to 421 km by 2030, said a top official.

RTA is moving ahead with its strategic plan for uplifting public transport systems with the aim of raising the share of public transport trips to 20 per cent over the next five years and pushing it further to 30 per cent by 2030, stated Mattar Al Tayer, the director general and chairman of the board of executive directors.

He was speaking at the 61st UITP World Congress and Exhibition held in Milan, Italy, recently. The event is an important global platform for public transport specialists to showcase the latest technologies in the field.

Al Tayer said the masterplan of the rail network in Dubai envisages leveraging the marine transport services including the extension of the total length of marine lines to 450 km.

Under the plan, the number of buses is expected to grow to 2000 over the next five years lifting about two million riders per day.

RTA had recently unveiled Route 2020 project to extend the Red Line of Dubai Metro 15 km to reach the site of the Expo.

Addressing the gathering, Al Tayer lauded the partnership and the distinctive co-operation between the RTA, UITP and all countries of the region towards serving the public transport sector and sharing knowledge for a better future.

“Achieving this goal requires linking technological systems with the existing and proposed infrastructure, and linking the technology with the public transport systems to ease the use of transport systems. It also requires integrating multi-modal transit systems, and framing policies and legislation to keep pace with the development of transport systems such as legislation regarding car-pooling (shared cars) and the use of driverless vehicles,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
