Dubai sets $816m for eco-smart projects

DUBAI, April 14, 2015

Dubai Municipality has allocated a budget of Dh3 billion ($816.6 million) for the implementation of a series of projects across the emirate this year, said a top official.

These projects are in line with Dubai’s relentless drive towards smart city and sustainability and some of them are focused on heritage and tourism areas, including Al Shandagha area and Al Fahidi Historical District, one of the emirate's oldest heritage sites, remarked Hussain Nasser Lootah, the director general of Dubai Municipality.

Lootah was speaking at the inauguration of the 10th edition of the Dubai WoodShow 2015 on Tuesday (April 14).

The exhibition has attracted more than 230 exhibitors representing suppliers, manufacturers and other players from related industries.

"The show is displaying a wide range of wood products as well as machineries that we think adds value to the regional wood industry which is witnessing huge advancements worldwide in terms of technologies and solutions. This event helps players in the region see these developments at first hand," stated the Dubai Municipality head.

During his tour of the Dubai WoodShow 2015 expo, Lootah was briefed on latest developments in the timber production industry.

The construction sector, he stated, was a key driver of wood business in Dubai as it is widely used in residential projects.

According to a report entitled 'Future Outlook of the Wood Industry in the GCC', the UAE has the second largest construction sector economy in the GCC region with a total building projects worth $21 billion carried out in 2013 against the backdrop of UAE winning Expo 2020.

Josine Heijmans, the exhibition director at Strategic Marketing & Exhibitions, the event organiser, said hardwood product imports have been increasing recently which proves the relevance of this industry to the construction sector in the region.

“At the expo, we display technologies used during different stages of wood production before they are exported to the other countries. There are major global manufacturers onsite showcasing real production process using giant machines," stated Heijmans.

"This exhibition is geared towards meeting all requirements of timber products," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
