METRO WORK, NEW ROADS PLANNED

UAE government ..... gearing up for the mega event.

Dubai to award Expo 2020 tenders in 2015

DUBAI, October 11, 2014

The UAE government will start issuing tenders for several major infrastructure projects in connection with the 'Dubai World Expo 2020' during the first quarter in 2015, said a report.

Dubai, which had won the right to host Expo 2020 in 2013 beating out cities from Turkey, Russia and Brazil, has earmarked billions of dollars for Expo 2020 infrastructure work including an extension of the metro rail link, new hotels and roads, reported the Gulf News, citing a senior minister.

Reem Al Hashemi, the UAE Minister of State and managing director for the Dubai World Expo 2020 Bid Committee, pointed out that the Expo 2020 infrastructure investment was likely to be in the range of €5 billion to €7 billion ($6.2 billion and $8.7 billion).

Dubai has announced the launch and re-launch of a number of mega projects this year as the emirate bounces back from the global financial crisis and housing property downturn in 2008 and 2009, said the report.

Last month, Dubai unveiled plans for the expansion of Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC), which is expected to handle the bulk of the 20 million visitors in 2020. The project is likely to cost $32 billion, it stated.

According to Reem, the Expo site will permanently host a museum, apartment and office buildings as well as the relocated Dubai World Trade Centre. A total of 30,000 Emirati volunteers will be involved in hosting of Expo 2020, she added.
