Six killed in Saudi wall collapse, probe ordered

RIYADH, September 11, 2014

Saudi Arabian authorities have ordered a probe into a wall collapse incident which claimed the lives of six construction workers in the Makkah region of the kingdom, said a report.

The workers, mostly Indian and Pakistani nationals employed by a leading construction company, were killed on Wednesday morning when a retaining wall at the Jabal Kaaba project in the city collapsed, reported the Arab News.

Makkah Governor Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah has set up a technical committee to determine the reason for the accident, the report added.

Civil Defence rescuers and other workers used heavy equipment to dig up the bodies trapped under sand and heavy concrete blocks that formed the 12-m-high wall.

“We had dug out five bodies in the morning and another body later in the evening,” said a Makkah Civil Defence spokesman.

Five others who sustained minor injuries were transferred to a local hospital for treatment, he added.
