TRL wins green award for Qatar project
Doha, April 13, 2014
UK-based Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), a provider of independent research, consultancy, testing and certification for all aspects of transport, has won the 'Green Mind Award' for the best 'Green Innovation' project in Mena region.
The project, “Investigating Recycled Aggregate Materials in Construction,” aimed to reduce the amount of solid waste accumulating in Qatar and Mena and provide a practical solution for a cheaper and sustainable aggregate supply into the region, said a statement.
The Qatar Construction Specifications will be updated and a recycling target developed for the National Development Strategy as a result of the project, it said.
It was funded by the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and beat off stiff competition from over 720 other entries from 12 countries in the region.
As many as 27 projects were shortlisted into nine categories with three finalists in each for the awards.
Full scale site trials are currently underway to demonstrate how recycled aggregates can be used in practice, following extensive laboratory tests, said the statement.
The use of research-based evidence to develop and implement new technologies will enable government organisations and the construction industry to establish reliable and sustainable infrastructure, it said.
Khaled Hassan, regional manager, Qatar, said: “It is a great honour to win this award and importantly, through the Green Mind Award organisation encouraging investors, there is every potential for the results to be implemented across the region”.
The awards ceremony, which was held recently, will be televised on National Lebanese television (LBCI and LDC) on April 22, it added. - TradeArabia News Service
