Gemalto to deploy contactless EMV cards for NCB

JEDDAH, April 7, 2016

Saudi Arabia's National Commercial Bank (NCB) has chosen Gemalto, a leader in digital security, to migrate its entire portfolio of credit cards to fast, convenient and secure contactless EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) cards, according to a report.

Using Gemalto's Clarista contactless EMV cards, NCB will offer its more than four million consumers the chance to save time when shopping with speedy transactions, said the Saudi Gazette report.

The card was customised to meet the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (Sama) specifications and Gemalto was first to achieve that certification for a dual interface card in the kingdom, it said.

About two million contactless cards will be deployed in Saudi Arabia by the end of the year, with an annual growth of 25 per cent through to 2019, according to ABI Research.

The number of contactless point of sale (POS) terminals has been forecast to grow at 57 per cent per annum over the same period.
