Bahrain's banking sector showcased at US event

MANAMA, October 20, 2014

More than 300 banking industry leaders, including representatives of many US and other institutions that are looking to invest in Bahrain, came together at the Fairmont Hotel Washington DC.

They were attending "The Banks in Bahrain" reception, organised by the Bahrain Association of Banks (BAB) in association with Financial Times Business on the sidelines of the annual World Bank/International Monetary Fund meetings, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The Bahrain delegation hosting the reception was led by Finance Minister and Minister in charge of Oil and Gas Affairs Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa and Central Bank of Bahrain Governor Rasheed Al Maraj.

Al Baraka Banking Group chief executive Adnan Yousif, United Gulf Bank (UGB) chief executive Rabih Soukarieh, National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) general manager Hussain Al Hussaini, Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF) director Solveig Nicklos and BAB chief executive Robert Ainey received the guests.

Guests included Bahrain's Ambassador to the US Shaikh Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Khalifa, members of the delegation from the embassy in Washington DC, finance ministers, central bank governors, chairmen and chief executives of major banking groups and staff from the World Bank and the IMF.

A number of advisers, consultants and speakers who will be visiting Bahrain also made important contacts during the reception.

"The reception in Washington offered a unique opportunity for investors to meet key stakeholders in Bahrain's banking and finance sector and learn about the advantages that Bahrain offers as the gateway to GCC countries and the region," Yousif said.

The event was supported by the CBB and the Economic Development Board.

Sponsors included Ahli United Bank, ABC, BBK, Investcorp, NBB, United Gulf Bank, Al Baraka, Ithmaar Bank, BIBF and SICO.

Many representatives of the sponsors were present at the reception and had the opportunity to discuss important business matters with the wide range of guests from numerous countries.

"One of our missions is to promote the financial sector in Bahrain both regionally and internationally," said Ainey.

This was BAB's ninth reception held to coincide with the meetings. - TradeArabia News Service
