Hitachi signs MoU with US to boost energy for data centres, AI

Hitachi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the US Department of Commerce to enhance energy infrastructure for data centres and promote sustainable AI growth.

Hitachi has expressed support for strategic investments by the Japanese and US governments aimed at stabilising power supply and advancing AI technology.

Key initiatives include grid modernisation, electrification, and the construction of the next-generation nuclear reactor, BWRX-300.

This agreement may lead to expanded manufacturing activities in the US, including increased transformer production and localisation of energy technologies.

The BWRX-300, developed by GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, is designed for economic efficiency and safety. Hitachi is committed to supporting its construction by providing equipment and engineering services.

Previously, Hitachi announced a historic $1 billion investment in the US electrical industry to meet rising demand from AI data centres.

The BWRX-300 is set to be part of North America's first small modular reactor project at the Darlington New Nuclear Project in Canada, expected to connect to the grid by the end of 2030.

Toshiaki Tokunaga, President & CEO Hitachi, said: “Energy is the lifeblood of economic strength in the 21st century. As strongly supported by today’s announcement, Hitachi stands with both governments of Japan and the US in advancing the global infrastructure and AI innovation. As a trusted partner in social innovation powered by AI, we are committed as True One Hitachi to address US infrastructure challenges to build a better and more sustainable society.” -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
